With his two touchdown passes against the Dolphins, Manning now has 275 career scoring tosses and has moved past Joe Montana into seventh-place in league history.
The Colts rolled up 399 total yards against the NFL's third-ranked defensive unit as Manning completed passes to seven receivers, including 11 to wide receivers Reggie Wayne (six for 70 yards) and Marvin Harrison (five receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown).
Miami had been allowing nearly 282 yards per game coming into the game.
''I thought it was an excellent defense. They were an excellent test for us,`` Manning said. ``I said that earlier in the week after watching their defense on film that it's hard to believe that their record is what it is,'' he said. ``They've got an outstanding defense, great playmakers, defensive line, linebackers, secondary.''
The Colts have the worst run defense in the league...or as one Star sportswriter put it, "in history." Win or lose I'm happy these guys are in our town...I think the Indy press is too, but you'd never guess by reading them when the team loses. Maybe somebody has to see all these pampered rich guys and hold them to the fire, it's not my job. I just admire the heck out of the Colts.
"Those guys weren't really playing for anything and they still came in and played well," cornerback Nick Harper said of Miami (6-10). "Just think of a team that's coming in here and is playoff-caliber and has everything to lose and gain.
"We've definitely got to play better in the playoffs."
Miami converted 8-of-15 third downs. Ronnie Brown ran for 115 of the Dolphins' 150 yards against the NFL's worst run defense. Miami averaged 5.8 yards per carry.
But when Lemon, in his first NFL start, got the visitors close to the end zone, they had to settle for field goals five times until a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Randy McMichael cut the deficit to five.
