We've missed THIS defense all year. After giving up an average of 173 yards on the ground throughout the regular season, the normally horrible defense embarrassed Chiefs workhorse running back to just thirty two yards in thirteen carries. We were all hoping for an emotional pick-up with the return of safety Bob Sanders, but no one dreamed the D would stuff the vaunted Johnson to those miserable numbers, certainly the Chiefs did NOT anticipate this result.
Bob had one (well timed) interception and a handful of tackles, but his re-insertion put those who were filling in for his absence back to the line-up spots they knew best. Not only was his intensity catchy, but the defense finally got fed up with being the league joke. Peyton was as good as post-season Peyton usually is, but actually having the defense show up made it easier to keep the ball on the ground. Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes were a lot of fun to watch. At one point in the game, the tv announcer revealed that while the Colts had 22 first downs, the Chiefs had only 21 yards offense. This is not the Colts we've been used to this year. (from wish-tv)
INDIANAPOLIS - The fact that Indianapolis beat Kansas City 23-8 in the AFC Wildcard playoffs was not aNext week, the Ravens, always a great opponent.surprise. How the Colts did it was almost shocking.
They won when Peyton Manning and the offense had an off day. But the Colts' much-maligned defense stepped up and halted the Chiefs powerful running game cold. The Colts' defense didn't allow a Chiefs first down until there was just three and a-half minutes left in the third quarter.
Update! Some other media, particularly the KC press, are despondent or un-enthused about the outcome of the game. This Washington Times review is less despairing. The Colts are an otherwise very high quality offense that just can't seem to get it together for the playoffs. The Chiefs offense was awful, but the KC defense has much for which to to be proud. Getting Ty Law from the Patriots probably scared the entire Colts pass offense to death as he's been nothing but trouble for Manning and the boys for years!
