November Seventh is coming upon us like an out of control locomotive. I consider myself a Republican partisan. There may be a Democrat or two out there that think the same way on issues as I do but voting for one serves to strengthen a political party that, by and large, thinks precisely the opposite way as me. That also explains why it's easy for me to sometimes hold my nose while voting for Republican folks with whom I disagree.
Indianapolis' Indiana Seventh District is getting more notice in the national press than normal. The incumbent is Julia Carson, Democrat. She's been our representative since 1994. Yup, the Gingrich Revolution added another member to the Black Congressional Caucas.
She impresses me on a personal level. A few years ago there occurred an unfortunate incident at a high school basketball game and racism is considered to have been involved. (I'm being purposefully vague, I wasn't there) Ms Carson went to the town where it happened, which has a redneck reputation. She spoke in several small groups to students about her experiences growing up in a racist era and what made it so painful. All involved were said to have had a positive experience.
Because of her effort, if I must have a leftist representative, I'm happy at least that ours doesn't fan the flames. She has won most contests with about a 60-65% voting advantage.
She's ahead in most polls but one put her at 50% and her challenger at a little less. But , then again, that happens for some reason in every congressional election. In our district, as opposed to just about everywhere else, the democrats seem to get undercounted in polls. She is having health problems though, and apparently is often not showing up for session votes.
Her challenger shares his name with a great running back that, after he left the Rams, played for the Colts a while back. Eric Dickerson is a used car dealer, not a football player. But he sure enjoyed some instant name recognition. He's running a good and clean (as far as I can tell) campaign that has been almost completely independent of any national Republican party assistance, they wrote him off early. He is Black. He will not vote for Pelosi for speaker of the house. He will get my vote.
